poppy problem

Hi

I have some beautiful poppies and they are dying. The buds are covered with black slime and the stalks are bending over. Is there anything I can do to save them. One is plain pink but the other is a hybrid. one parent is the pink poppy and the other is an Oriental poppy. I really don't want to lose that one. Please help.

Patricia

I would dig them up cut them  right back until slime has gone and put them in a pot with fresh soil /compost - can't see you losing them if you still have the roots.

    Hope this helps.

PC a picture would help us, I haven't experienced something like black slime and I do have oriental  poppies. Any chance you could wash it off with a weak washing up liquid ?

  • Hi Chidders.and KEF I didnt think of that. Im afraid I got rid of the black ones, and I have sprayed the ones that are left with Tumbleblight. It said on the bottle that it could be used for ornamental flowers. If the problem continues I will take a picture and upload it here. Ill dig the roots out too and save them if at all possible. Thank you for your advice.

Hi, I too have the same problem with two out of my three oriental poppies this year. The leaves are turning black from the tips upwards along the whole leaf and seem to be rotting. Although the plant has produced the ball of a flower head that has turned black in the last few days and has rotted to a black slime on one plant. One is Pattys Plum and the other a soft pale pink, variety unknown. I have dug the worst affected one up, Pattys Plum, and have taken off all damaged leaves and planted it into a pot to try to encourage it to recover. I have noticed several small slugs around the root ball. I wonder if that is the problem - excessive slug damage. The other is not so bad so I have removed the damaged parts and left it where it is for now, but have put a support frame on it to try to keep the new leaf growth off the soil. I do have a third one and that is really strong and healthy and flowering it's socks off! Any other advice would be welcome please
