Lilac Bush Pruning

When should a Lilac be pruned? I know the answer is probably after it has finished flowering but mine never flowers due to the fact that I am obviously pruning at the 'wrong time'. The reason this happens is because I keep trying to keep it at a managable height/depth! So please, could someone tell me the best time to do it. many thanks.

Then prune it as soon as it would have finished flowering, so as soon as possible. It will make new shoots for flowering next year. But feed it as well with a fertiliser for flowering shrubs or roses. Lilacs are greedy and thirsty plants.
