Clematis flowers

My clematis is in full flower but suddenly small holes have appeared in all the flowers and some of the leaves. Now the outer edges of the flowers have been eaten away but there is no sign of the culprit(s). Any suggestions as to what is happening?

Without pics I would suggest snails/slugs. They are pesky blighters image

Snap Frederick, went out this morning to admire my one flower which I am very proud of.....to find half missing!!!  No leaves have been eaten though which seems a bit odd??  Pesky slugs!! image

Fresh eggshells ready to go on tonight and may put a slug pub out too.....I'll stop them!!

Are they like these ones Fred?  If so, don't think its is slugs - but would love to know what instead ....

  • Hi Chicky     Somewhat similar now but it started with tiny holes throughout the petals and then developed into chunks out of the edges. I thought about slugs/snails but the flowers are high up on an obelisk and there is no sign of any insect infestation or indeed any slugs/snails.  Will try the eggshell scatter and combine this with slug pellets but I don't hold out hope of a recovery.

I had little holes appearing on my Clematis leaves (not flowering yet) and I found a tiny little caterpillar on one of the leaves.  Said caterpillar now dead and Clematis well and truly sprayed image

This is mine, no holes on the leaves and not eaten any more overnight.  I've had a good look and cant see any bugs anywhere at all image

  • I have subsequently put down some slug pellets and next morning collected several small snails so maybe they were the culprits after all. I have not seen any caterpillars, slugs or snails actually on the plant but one little snail was attempting the long climb up the support!!!!!

Many thanks for all your comments I am afraid it is not worth taking a picture of my clematis as it is now in tatters!
