Crab Apple Suckers
We have a mature crab apple tree which produces suckers which pop up at various distances from the trunk. Up until now we have pruned them down. Now we are planning to plant in the 4 or 5 meters around the base of the tree. We were planning to put weed control membrane down then cover with slate or stones.
We thought this might actually suppress the suckers, but are worried that the suckers will keep coming and will push up the weed control and we'll end up with bumps and or have more difficulty keeping the sucker backs.
Any advice or experience around this would be very welcome. Thanks.

Like all suckers you have to take them from the main stem of the plant. In crab apples you need to remove them from the trunk. They will still occur even if you put a membrane down.
