I stumbled across this article looking for advice (I'm a newbie onion grower!) because my onions are suffering too and this sounds like the same thing mine have. However, along with the bolting, mine also have really thick necks and not much of a bulb, and to add to it, they have now been battered by the wind so are now leaning and have probably had their roots disurbed! They have also been growing for nearly a year - is that right?
I sowed them from seed in cells March/April last (ish) and didnt get them in the ground until about June/July - probably too late (?) and they started growing nicely. By late summer/autum, they were no way near ready so left them too it over the winter. In spring I nipped the flower heads off as they had bolted, but only at the top - maybe I should have cut them lower down? Other than keeping the weeds down and giving them the odd water when its been bone dry, they have pretty much been left to get on with it.
We have eaten a couple but one was a double onion in one bulb with two really thick necks, and both were mainly neck rather than bulb - they were very small but tasted ok!
I wondered if anyone could advise me please if its something I have/haven't done, and when they will be ready to harvest? It's my first time growing them so expected some hiccups but I didn't expect them to take this long to grow!
I have bolted onions .......... I have pulled them up and left them to harden up on the soil .... Can I reuse the bulbs (replant them) and try again, most of the bulbs have divided into 2 or 3 ... The bulbs are about the size of a pickled onion ..... many thanks
