So glad the maggots are sorted--and that wee Jess is feeling better.Woke to yet another fine day--quite disappointed, as there was a possibility of rain in the forecast. It's well over 90 days without here. Have started moving tender plants into the greenhouse, as the nights are cool. Only things blooming are colchicums and monkshood---both will be moved to the deer garden if it ever rains. All the apples are in the freezer, and just got a call to expect a load of Cox's Orange pippins soon. Last year I made some into applesauce, which was the best I've ever made.
Becks glad you've sorted that out and that Jess has perked up. You have put me off rice for life.
Kate they flowered twice this year but I've never collected seeds from them before. I picked 4 bell- shaped seed heads off a few days ago. They are now bone dry so gave them a good shake and scrape and I've got loads out of them. Sorry about yours
Gosh Inka 90 days with no rain..... more like 90 days with rain every one of them for me this year.
The colchicums were just out when we were in Austria- earlier than previously. I love them, but have nowhere suitable here for them. Just lovely momories & photos of them in the meadows there. OH very happy to use his new camera!
That's reminded me to visit the fruit farm when go down to NWorcs next week. Crispin apples should be around & they can be eaters or cookers. Only ever seen them there. J.
I am a woman of a certain age with tools as well - have my own sander & hammer. Plus of course my own decorating tools.
Inka, you might find that once it starts to rain it won't stop again...that seems to have been what happened here as soon as they brought in the hosepipe ban! Hope your plants manage to survive.
Yesterday I made 4 courgette cakes, intending to freeze a couple of them. I left them to cool on the kitchen worktop, went back later to store them and there were only 3 and some crumbs! I think there were a number of culprits.
Scary times on the island last night--Fire! Apparently it started when a propane tank exploded--fotunately someone on the island opposite spotted and even videoed it--thank goodness the owners were not there. Many neighbours were on alert to evacuate--but the volunteer fire dept managed to put it out. It had ignited brush and forest around it--very dangerous. The house is gone, but as of this morning the fire is out. It's quite scary here when it's so tinder dry--we had a major fire here in 2006 that burned for days. It's gratifying to note the magnificent response of the community, though--especially those volunteer firefighters! I am some distance away, so not in danger.
