Holland-very expensive the fuel is the dearest we came across -in Spain1.54 or so in France 1.62 in Holland 1.88-we were only there for 24 hours did a quick trip to Amsterdam it rained, stank of cannabis and saw a dubious young lady-bought a few bits and completed the last leg-so can't give a qualified opinion of the country -people seemed friendly-we had great help at the station -most spoke understandable English but not sure I would return.

Kate do you wear silk shorts for gardening ? image Just curious.

Flowerchild, I'm going to try what you suggested . I usually grow my from seed every year. Do you just use cutting compost ?

Gosh Jean I am blushing, I am afraid I am a bit more of a heavy duty cotton sort of girl, but I am sure the builders next door would love the silk shorts.image

Geoff that lady did make quite an impressionimage

Haha ! It was just the mention of tissue paper that made me curious. I've got a silk blouse and that is how I store mine over winter. I'm sure the builders would be impressed but that would delay the work .  They seem to have been there a long time.

Jean they were just building a summer house/ home office but they have had some problems with the ground image so they are now building a retaining wall, at this rate they will be here for months. Do you not store all your winter clothes in tissue?image

Hi Jean, I always use fresh cutting compost from a trusted brand. Otherwise there's no knowing what's in the compost; I have come across bits of iron and glass already whenever I used brands from the supermarket. Please remember that you will need to pot them on once it's getting warmer again.

re fuel prices: € 1.88 is not the price you would have paid in this region, that's for sure. We live opposite a petrol station and it's current price for unleaded petrol is € 1.82, and they are known for being expensive. We just hop over to the other side of the border and pay € 1.69 in Germany. More than half of the fuel price is just taxes anyway.

re speaking English: we are obliged to learn at least Dutch and English at secondary school. Lots of people also learn French and/or German and nowadays Chinese seems to become more and more popular.

Personally I don't like Amsterdam very much but once every ten years it is fun to explore the canals. I can recommend our region, Maasduinen.image

We have inbuilt ward robes-how come as a chap I get less that an a third of space and have to share that with other items?-

my stuff is on hangers-am too common for tissue paper.

Why would someone trek across Antarctica in the dark and in minus70C-do they wear silk shorts?
