Sorry about your blight, Becks, but you can still eat the potatoes if you harvest them now. They'll soon go mushy. If you pick off the affected leaves on the toms you might save them. I've given up with potatoes and tomatoes. I used to get good crops but these last summers have been so wet and ideal for blight. I even sowed varieties of toms that were supposed to be resistant but still got it. however I did stick in a 'Gardener's Delight' plant I bought from a car boot this year and it has escaped so far and in spite of being neglected I have had a few tomatoes from it.
Pam, the potatoes have only been in the containers 4-5 weeks, flowers are only just appearing. Will there even be anything to harvest under there? They were earlies for Christmas. I've cut off the affected leaves, but there was nothing on the haulms, so not sure it is blight with them. Might be just fungal. These were the leaves.
My other little pots haven't got it up the other end of the garden, nor the plants directly in the ground, so not all bad.
"Hm" words beginning with "F" I know a few, Floribunda, Felicity, Flophouse and fig roll. It was not expected that the WO1 (me) would swear at the inept dancing called drill being performed by the young people whose heads were buried in the next Pop concert or a Naafi rock bun. When I had suffered enough a loud, very loud bellow of "Yer g'at moose feather pluckers" would bring them to a worried halt, and if I got very mad it would be "Yer G'at load of jumped up never come down black enamelled manure shifters" but they knew better than get me that mad. So we would get the three minutes of concentration they were capable off, they soon learned.
Lunch long over, chicken carcase in stock pot with veg on simmer, soup with the squash I roasted tomorrow, the last breast saved for a sandwich, waste ye not want ye not as my old Mum would say.
Well Songs of praise, love a good sing a long, Country File, Inspector Gently, it is in our area so we can pick marks off it. PalaisGlide came about having three falls with the BBC over my old name for some reason, had five goes blocked each time and happened to be looking at a photo on the electronic frame of me dancing the Palais Glide with two WVS ladies on leave in Port Said, wrote it down was accepted and logged in before I could change my mind, so are world shattering decisions made.
Just got back from the garden centre, been looking for tulip bulbs. Didn't find anything at the first one, but then my OH remembered there is a J Parker, Garden centre/ nursery just a few miles further on. It used to belong to a Dutch man who I think has now retired and J Parkers have taken over. He always had a great selection of bulbs, so we thought we would try there. Well, it's like an Aladdin's cave of goodies, bulbs of every description, Daffs, Tulips, in fact just about everything, except the one I had gone for." Too early" we were told," we are only just getting Tulips in." I think every other variety of tulip was there except Prinses Irene.(Well perhaps not every one), but I still managed to spend quite a few pounds on things I didn't know I wanted.
Will now have to go back in mid September
We are having pork steaks and chicken, marinaded in garlic, olive oil, lemon and thyme, with of course beans, carrots and some sort of potatoes for tea tonight..
I do not mind cooking but find deciding what to cook for someone else tiring so I asked OH to make me a list of dinners, so now I have 9 different meals for the next week, we shall see how this works
A pleasant end to the day, bright and calm outside. Decided to take the push-mower for a late spin, makes me feel less guilty about eating extra square of chocolate later.
Not that much that appeals to me on telly tonight. Might watch some cycling - the Tour of Spain, ITV4 7pm. Chris Froome was podiuming last time I tuned in, earlier in the week. Countryside around Barcelona, where they've been today, might be interesting, even if scorched.
It's the final episode of Once Upon a Time, C5 8pm. Watched the first few episodes, but then gave up and have not seen most of the subsequent 20-odd episodes, but might tune in to see the conclusion - everyone lives happily ever after (I hope). That's followed by Celebrity Big Brother; I wonder what that's going to be like.
Evening all, just had a lovely few hours cutting back in the garden and there is a lot still left to do. The ground is sodden even though it is a hillside. Once the rain had stopped it was quite hot.
Frank, what sort of dance is the palais glide then? Does that mean you are a twinkle toes?
Kate, thanks for the reminder, there were some I had forgotten. I agree about the cooking, my husband cooks but I have to decide what we are having and how it is going to be cooked. Sometimes I just say you decide, you're in charge of food provision.
Chris, does that mean you have been tiptoeing through the tulips (sorry, I have a habit of linking stuff to songs).
Becks, de dum de dum, de dum, de dum, de dum (as Eric Idle would say), I suspect you probably do!
The afternoon exploit's done n dusted! An enjoyable afternoon was had by all, (Go's without saying! Dad paid!) n belly's now full!
Middle daughter had the twin's dressed in imitation wax barber jackets n matching corduroy flat cap's, looked very fetching n dapper I must admit!
Now home! French Doors flung wide open! Sun out! n listening to bird song!
Beck's - I too discovered blight on our greenhouse tomatoes this morning, n my reaction began with F...........For Football's Sake!!!!!
Have cut out most of the affected leaves to try slow down the spread, but have left firm instructions with my gardening buddy, that if it get's worse, pull the fruit n place in newspaper lined tray's n lay on the staging in the tunnel! Fingers crossed!

Chris that tulip looks lovely.

Gary, you should NEVER feel guilty about eating an extra square of chocolate.
Glyn, believe me, I do.
Much condolances Dean. We will mourn together!
