£450 could have bought a couple of greenhouses, and lots of pressies to compensate Jess.
On the fence business, my neighbour on one side told me that he'd be replacing some of his panels sometime soon. I thought that was just for info. It never occured to me to offer anything (and I won't be). The fence is not actually falling down, and if he wants a nice posh new fence, then that's fine with me.
Is it really too late to backtrack on Spain. Will there be any other small kids for Jess to play with.
On the fence - I think that how you actually get along with the neighbours is key. My neighbour is actually very good, and, purely through his generosity, I don't think he'd either ask, or actually expect anything.
If you have a good relationship with them, and they can see the need to replace the fence, to keep their dog in, then maybe they might offer to assist. It makes a difference too if you are paying to have the fence replaced by a contractor, or are doing it yourself. If it's DIY you could assist each other.
If your relationship with neighbours is at all tense or tetchy, then I can understand them expecting you to foot the whole bill, and rather liking the idea.
There will be two 7 year olds Gary. One whom she's never met, and the other is my friends son who is autistic, so acts a bit younger than his age, BUT, we went to Skegness earlier in the year with my friend and son, only for 2 days, and all they did was bicker! There's supposed to be a lovely beach by where we are, which Jess will love, but friends son doesn't like beaches, so I think most days we will be escaping down to the beach!
Becks you will probably have a great time, meet some interesting people and Jess will want to go every year.
Jean I think if you had approached them about type/style of fence, dates etc before hand you could have asked them to contribute and discussed what would happen if you let the fence rot. As you are the gardener the benefit is all on your side so they probably realise that they are on to a good thing. I would be very worried about my plants.
Hi Gary , Becks , Geoff - well we saw one of the people at the back - they aren't really neighbours and w don't know them at all because of the layout of the house . I wouldn't have asked them to chip in at all but one lady offered to pay half which we declined as the fence spans 2 houses. She is going to contribute towards it which I thought was really nice. There wasn't anybody in next door so we've put a note through to let them know whats happening and contractors will be installing it . Not looking forward to it at all. Thinking about my poor plants - but like I said it definitely needs sorting - its all rotted behind the tree that we had lowered and the tops falling off ! Apart from that their dog keeps worrying away at a hole in it . Have visions of him/her appearing in the garden one day.
kate we didn't realise it would be done so soon and as hubby off work decorating he said it would be a good time . They are just bog-standard panels so think everyone will be happy as they will just blend in . I feel bad that I couldn't give them more notice but didn't expect it to happen so soon.

Yes, exactly Gary!
