Hi I think it's definitely an earwig as Geoff says. They nibble dahlias but I don't know about strawberries.

My chickens were making a bit of fuss earlier so the dog and I had a walk round the fields to see if foxy loxy was about. I couldn't believe how many ripe blackberries there were so went back to get a container and have enough to make a blackberry sponge. They seem to get earlier every year.

I googled red earwig and similar pictures came up, so I think you're both right. Never seen a red one.image  I hate bugs.

I hate spidersimage horrible creepy scarey things

  • Becks you will just have to do as Geoff and I have done and get your own hens! Having said that, 3 of mine have gone broody so I'm only getting one egg a day at the moment image

Those potatoes sounded ridiculously expensive, plus if they weren't going to store for long they could have come from a blighted crop, in which case they will turn to mush (and smell terrible!!).

PPam - no ripe blackberries here yet, I will be on the lookout. Love an apple and blackberry crumble (or any crumble for that matter).

I would LOVE to keep chickens, but I don't think I have enough space to keep them happy, and don't know where I'd stand with keeping them, this being council property and all. Are they noisy?

They don't need an awful lot of room and they are no more noisy than a dog- they crow a bit when they lay an egg but you would do that if you had laid an egg-they are  sweeties- and you can still get rescue hens for around a fiver.

Becks, I don't see that many earwigs. Probably because I haven't got the types of plants they find attractive. The pincers are at the back end.

Interesting facts about earwigs (from BBC website): "The name earwig is derived from the old English 'earwicga' which means 'ear beetle'. It was once commonly believed that earwigs would burrow into people's ears at night and lay eggs in their brains."

The first photo's a nice sharp one, it's not easy to get sharp pics of insects.

Lympics fans - in first heat, Shanaze Reade came 5th in a field of 16. More races to come for her. She's still in the running, but there's room for improvement. Will not mention the show jumping.
