I like the comments from a few of the people we hear from - such as Michael Johnson, and Chris Boardman; they really know what they're talking about and can explain it well. But a lot waffle, and try to describe things that we can see perfectly well with our own eyes. They would be better silenced.
It's the ones who come second I feel sorry for. No one remembers their names. They must be really dedicated to put everything aside, even their families for their sport. Didn't someone once say ( I can't remember who) 'if you ever see me in a boat again shoot me' then went on to compete again.
The Curiousity Mars thing is an achievement, Jean. I read somewhere we might have originated from Mars and came to Earth as bacteria carried on asteroids.
Talking of things astrological the Perseid meteor shower is due this weekend. Hope the sky is clear.
That is the same for all sporting events-FA Cup,Wimbledon etc most are there just to make up the numbers with no real chance of winning-it could be that without entering they dont get international funding-this is the stuff that goes on behind the scenes??
But if you go out of the first round of Wimbledon at least you get 10 grand, spending 4 years training to run for 10 secs and go out, I just wondered if they were gaining experience for future years.
Probably-that heptathlete is a junior champion so gets a chance on the bigger stage with J Ennis-her moment is in 4 years-it is probably considered part of the training programme-if you don't compete then the whole thing might seem a waste of time.

Pam -Steve Redgrave.
My curiosity is about the ones that do not even qualify from the first heat, are they just here for the experience? Did they expect to qualify?
Geoff there was an interesting article in the paper about how successful Jamaicans have been in proportion to the size of the island.
