I was dragged up in West Midlands, then moved to Manchester/Kent/Wrexham/Liverpool/Hastings/Somerset. I was always good at languages so tend to be a bit of a chameleon where accents are concerned. A friend was listening to my voicemail message on my mobile the other day in my presence, and said I sounded posh! Must be my 'telephone voice'. He said there was no trace of Midlands - not that I am ashamed of it, but some people seem to have a prejudice.
My parents were Black Country, though quite 'well spoken', and Mother didn't approve of us speaking 'Brummie'. Dad spoke two languages - Black Country at work and RP at home. My brother has moved back to the Black Country and likes to use the accent.

Unfortunately midlands has crept into my accent
I rang my mother the other week and said "hello Mam, how are you?" she replied "who's speaking?"

Nothing wrong with Midlands, Rosa.
