flowering climber suggestions please

In our front garden the border to the road is formed by various mature plants. I have just pruned back an overgrown weigela and pulled away lots of ivy (I don't like ivy) and uncovered a thick dead trunk/stump which I had thought was the weigela but is not. It's too entwined with other things to remove, and also looks quite nice structurally. It's about 3-4 ft tall but branches spread about 10ft wide. I'd like to plant a climber to clamber over it. I'd like the climber to flower about now (or some time between late May and August), as the other plants (weigela, kerria japonica) have finished so some colour now-ish would look good. The front garden has a Japanese feel, with acer, tamarisk, tree peony, anemones but not worried about being too "authentic". The border faces west and is pretty sheltered from wind. cool roots (eg for clematis) would be no problem with ivy covering the floor area. So, any suggestions for an attractive, not-thuggish, flower-heavy, flowering-now/soon climber?

Jazmine, Bougainvillea "Barbara Karst" (Hardier than other) or Clematis would be my goto plants as a climber plants. In a wooded area like that also honeysuckle could look pretty. They are all in flower now where I am so I would imagine they would be a little bit behind in the UK. (could be wrong) Just a thought anyways image

Ooh what clematis is that Nicky Nicky? It's a lovely colour and actually as I am planning on thinning out the ivy and replacing some of it with a vinca for groundcover, then a clematis would sort of echo the vinca in bigger form up the stump and along the branches?

Any other suggestions for flower-heavy clematis that will wrap nicely around these branches?

  • If you prefer the modern double flowering clematis, Crystal Fountain is in flower now and has been reliable over several years in my garden. It grows to about 6/7ft with lilac outer petals and white inner - I have found a photo image here:

The second burst of flowers tend to be single lilac.
