I have used Becks, much to my husband's disgust - it worked really well. Tesco's own cheap beer and the cheap French lager as well. Some days are better than others, I'll have trapped one or two slugs or snails, other days will be a dozen or so. We do have a can of Stella, which my husband doesn't like anyway, so I might give that a try . I bought the green slugs traps from Amazon - I got 10 in a pack, gave some away, but they are good for stopping the rain getting in.
My plants are still getting demolished though, so I've now also started putting down the organic slug pellets recommended by Which, so we'll see how that goes.
I have constructed a roof for mine to help with the watering down effect. I use a empty small water bottle cut in half sunk in the ground with about 2cms above ground to stop beetles falling in. I then have 3 small sticks around the outside angled towards the middle but not reaching the centre and then I balance a small plant pot saucer upside down on the top. It looks like a slug pub with a stool balanced above.
Stops the rain and I can still catch the cheeky monkeys. (hope you can imagine it)
This is so funny, reading all the replies, at the moment i dont use anything but my small gardens are packed with different plants, i do get slugs, and they are so annoying and when i see one i throw them onto the road and then the big birds eat them. I dont use pesticides etc, and wish i could get a resident hedgehog because they devour them Good Luck with the beer traps will have to try this myself
Wine dregs any good? Found a bottle of .... er ...... 'Cooking wine' and have popped some out. Haven't been down to see if it works. The one with the beer in is practically all slug and no beer now. Which is kind of And kind of
Hubby and I been on a slug hunt. we recon we just got about 40 slugs and some were even kindly sliding into the slug traps. Ours like Morrisons own basics larger (2%). and its really cheap! Took 4 off my lilies which have been annihilated, much to my disappointment and lead to the killing spree!
Shady2 what a great article..all was well until one has to sieve the slug slurry into a watering can . I think I'll may continue just to hunt the blighters by torch light. Thankfully there seems to be less and less of them each night. I may have lost a few battles, but I will win the war.
I can confirm that slugs and snails like Tesco everyday bitter, just emptied the traps and they were swimming with them. eughhh. However I still seem to be losing seedlings at an alarming rate. Maybe I should just grow holly!
