Rose with 7 petals

Peanuts3Peanuts3 Posts: 759

I moved this rose earlier on in the year, it has seven leaves which I always thought meant it was a sucker, however it does flower. I then read that if it has 7 leaves it could also be a rambler or climber ?

I've taken some photo's of it in flower and of the leaves and wondered if anyone was able to offer any more advise on what it may be, and what I should be doing with it.  I did have a recommendation that it was a hybrid tea and to take it right down to a leaf bud, which I've just noticed there is one at the bottom, but I'm guessing wrong time of year now.

..it has an Alba look about it to me...difficult to say, but I might guess at Rosa Alba semi-plena... look up some images of that one and see what you think.... Monty Don has one in his garden...and it's a fairly popular old rose variety...

Great, thank you Salino, gives me a start to see what I should do with it. Looking to train it against the fence currently.

...do you really want to keep it though Peanuts..?  to be brutally honest...it's not that attractive really is it, as a shrub... it looks old and haggard....there are so many other plants you could put in with better garden value I think... evergreen too with large white flowers... but it's up to you...it may have sentimental value... just a thought...

I think it would be quite possible to salvage that - I would hard prune it very soon, top dress it with Fish Blood and Bone and then a good mulching with farmyard manure.  With any luck it'll throw out some new shoots from below ground  - it's probably a rambler type and could be trained against the fence as a climber, or given a bit of support allowed to grow into a substantial bush.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Nothing to lose by pruning back to a healthy leaf and feeding as advised ,I also think it looks like a rambler .good luck !
