Laurel Hedge

I had a hedge on my boundary which was about 110 years old. My neighbour has removed it and erected a fence about 13 cm from the centre on my side of the land. He has said that the hedge will have moved by 13 cm north since it was planted. Can anyone please tell me what would cause a laurel hedge to move and which direction North, South etc. would it most likely go. We live close to the south coast. Is the hedge more prone to move with wind or sun?

I have looked on the internet for the answer with no success.

With thanks

that really does sound like the beginning of a row,and i would go straight to a good solicitor who deals with this kind of problem, I would not get involved with unqualified well meaning people, and I do  believe the first chat with the brief is free, i find some people so strange why don't people just talk to each other  before diving in,anyway good luck Keith LW.

Thanks Alan I have done that but the question bugs me as to why it would move.

    Thanks again

Thanks Philippa, Boundaries are a difficult subject as they can be either side of the garden these days, I have that sorted hopefully with a Solicitor but it was just bugging me as to why the base of the hedge could move.

Its me though that's almost as old as the hedge lol

Regarding the Boundary the hedge was planted over 114 years ago and I have been here for 29 years so I see no problem with the boundary being sorted.

    Thanks K

The centre of the laurel will be just where it was planted. The branches will probably have bulged more one way that the other. He's trying it on.

As Alan says, get a solicitor

I can see you getting some compo out of this how can he prove one way or the other if the hedge has moved? criminal damage is a crime and the police could have been called. If indeed a hedge could move its roots I would have thought that it would naturally move towards the direction of the sun not away from it. Don't let this apparent bully get away with this or he may do it again. Good luck.

Untended field hedges containing blackthorn will get wider over the years as the blackthorn suckers - when we bought our smallholding some of the hedges were over 15ft wide where they'd encroached onto the meadows.  However, the line of the original hedge is easy to see.
