alternative to roses

hi guys

I have black spot on my roses back and front gardens. I have patio roses, climbing roses, roses in pots, you name it.

they flower beautifully then down come the leaves, all diseased etc.

I don't want to be spraying them,i don't use chemcials, and besides, now its on all of my roses,i don't think it would help.

im thinking of getting rid of them, not all at once tho! but slowly, perhaps patio ones first.

can anyone think of an alternative plant? the patio ones are planted in between box going up a garden path.

cheers

Hi claire, did you want low growing shrubs or or groups of flowers.

For climbers, honeysuckle, jasmine, clematis or climbing hydranga.

Or acers, hydrangas, fushias, low growing shrubs like Deutzia rosea, or philadelphus microphyllus.

  • thanks lily, im thinking low growing shrubs to replace the patio roses?

Hi claire, I think it's a common problem when lots of roses are grown in close proximity - they become more susceptible to pests and diseases. I'm not  a rose expert by any means - Salino knows a lot so maybe she can advise. I'd be inclined to keep the ones in your pots but group them with other shrubs and plants and give them a tidy up. It will be easier to keep them 'clean'.The borders where you have roses will need cleared properly of any detritus, and nourished - diseases are harboured in the soil so don't be in a rush to put any roses back in the same place.

Lots of people use lavender in conjunction with roses as it's evergreen so if your soil and site suits it, that may be worth trying. Choisya is a nice shrub - several varieties including the golden ones, but it depends on the aspect. Shrubs like Potentilla are common but they do a great job as they flower for ages. Colours from whites through soft creams to orange and red. Spring bulbs would be useful and you could have those round any of the roses you keep. It depends what room you have as there are loads of things which will suit. Can you post a pic to give a better idea of your garden? image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • thanks guys!

I feel its time to bite the bullet on my big shrub rose, it looks dreadful, and its the first thing you see when you come up the steps into my summer house,im having fun looking thru gardening books to come up with an idea for a replacement!

the ones in pots and the smaller patio ones I will continue to keep taking the fallen leaves off and feeding them, and gradually replace them.
