Ajuga

Pam AdamsPam Adams Posts: 33

Loving the colour contrast I planted a couple of Ajuga along the front of the bed.  It has thrived beautifully.  My questions:

1.  How much 'control/intervention' does it need

2.  Does it help to cut down weeds?

Thanks

It has the potential to take over spreading by runners and roots.  I'm trying to clear a bed of it at the moment

It's very good ground cover so will prevent weeds from growing. It spreads very quickly but I've never had a problem clearing it away. Nothing is ever perfect.

I use ajuga as ground cover in shady or damp areas. I think mine is Caitlin's Giant taller than the normal one. The flowers are a lovely blue and the bees love them. It's very easy to thin/ pull out as the runners are on the surface and the roots aren't deep. You can pot on the offshoots if you want more plants they root easily.

Years ago I used Vinca Minor as ground cover under shrubs it was a nightmare to get rid off.
