Hi, I have a Rose Scarlet rose growing up my garage, it seems thick and growing well but it is showing a white fungus just below and covering the buds, and also the stem seems to be swelling into a lump just below bud in some areas.  Last year I had similar problem and so have given thick mulch, have fed well and sprayed with fungus and Uncle Tom.  It was not showing any symptoms at start of growth but this is now spreading.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this and what I can do?  It is a lovely rose, that gives a good display and I really want to save this.  Thank you.

That could be a bit of grey mould, due to the recent humid conditions. Although there is no commercially available treatment, spraying with a broad based fungicide may help, however it could also be powdery mildew again a commercial fungicide needs applying, and again the recent humid conditions will not have helped.

  • Hi Dave.this is the second year i've been troubled with this,i asked this forum last year and did as i was bid. But to no avail the dreaded thing is back. I.ve tried fungus spray, mulching with garden compost, even Old Toms tonic has been tried any help will be much appreciated.

..I think this comes back year after year unless you get on top of it by spraying weekly... you may already have this information but you can download in pdf form some useful detail here about what fungicides to use... the one from Westland might be suitable for your purposes...if not tried already...

The problem with fungus spores is that once you have them they are extremely difficult to get shot of. They persist in the soil and the warm wet winter means they don't die off. The recent warm weather hasn't helped either, so it's a problem you will have to cope with and hope next winter has some really cold weather. All you can do this year is spray and hope for the best.
