Magnolia

We have a 2 year old magnolia which regrettably died after it's first winter although we may have planted it too deep. The tree itself looks dead but now I have noticed small shoots growing from what appears to be below the graft point. I would like to know if this new growth is likely to be Magnolia or whatever the graft stock would be , if they are even grafted. ? Many thanks

    Hi

If it has been grafted it will have been on an easily propagated species of Magnolia. The only way to tell if it is a sucker would be to let it grow and see if the foliage is different, if it is too similar to differentiate you will not know until it flowers.

I agree, rootstock will be a Magnolia but what variety used is guessable. Magnolia does come back from the root, so if it was not grafted it may be the same variety.
