It'll be fine Vicky. Mine is Black Knight which has a slightly different habit from Lochinch, but that's the amount of growth you should get over a year or so. You'll get grit from DIY stores or Garden Centres. If you think you have a better spot for it, then move it if you want, but if you like where you have it then just improve the ground a bit and let it do it's thing. The ground gets a dull greeny bloom on it when it's too wet- so yes, it's the mossy looking bits. Try and keep the weeds away as well as you can, and you can apply a mulch of gravel or bark to help with that. You'll see a big difference in a month's time once it gets going.
Overwatering causes more damage to plants than almost anything else

A sunnier spot would be good - when it's in flower the butterflies will love feeding on the warm nectar
