Would anyone be so kind as to tell me the name of the prickly shrub which  has hawthorn like small white flowers in May?

That would be my first guess.

we may need a few more clues, or even better a photo.

    Clues:

    Evergreen or deciduous

    Scent

    leaf shape

    Size

    So, is it evergreen?

Try googling pyracantha for a start.

  • Berberis is a good hedging shrub with barbs, it is reddish in colour and yellow flowers in spring.
