Roses

Hello all,

I am having trouble with my opening buds on a rose in a container, they are looking as if thet are not going to open and they feel hard to the touch, any ideas.

How do you mean, '.... they are looking as if they are not going to open...." ?

Can you show us a photo or two?

I might be wrong but my initial thought if it was mine is that it hasn't had enough water.  The leaves look healthy and it has new leaves so don't think the plant is a problem.  Have you fed them with rose feed?

  • Hello, yes I did feed it about a month ago, and I think it has had enough water, the plant itself is healthy, it's just the opening buds don't look good and the centre feels hard. Thankyou for your reply,

I think that is what is called proliferation. Cause is not really known and can range from bud damage to a virus. If other buds come up the same then the most likely cause will be viral, and there will be no treatment other than removal of the whole plant. Mind you it may be worth forwarding a pic to one of the rose growers to seek advice I may well be wrong.

  • Oh dear, sounds a bit drasticimage thanks for reply, will see what happens to rest of buds.

If it's not a virus, then it could be as OL says, lack of regular watering. Roses in pots need an amazing amount of water. I have a lot and when underwatered the flowers are small.
