planting grass seed once paving removed

GardiniaGardinia Posts: 2

I am planning on planting grass seed but first have to remove paving which is covering about half of our garden. Most of the stones seem to have sand under them and I wonder if this can be mixed in with the rest of the soil? My concern is that I may end up with a patchy lawn. I would also appreciate advice on a fast growing seed and what the disadvantages might be. Many thanks

You've probably got cement in the sand if the patio was done properly, so digging it in wont do the soil any good. Remove as much as you can, then dig it over. Incorporate some composted material, level, tread, and then sow. You can get 10 day grass seed, which usually takes about 2 weeks, but being patient with grass is the key. If you look in the how too section on sowing a lawn, the advice there is spot on, but getting it right in the first place is the key.

Thanks Dave for your advice. We need to grow a lawn quickly as a quick fix and then do it properly in a couple of years. Do you think lawn turf would be the way to go? We don't want to spend too much (its one of many jobs we have to do) but we don't want it to look terrible either!

Turf will be much more expensive than seed and it's not too difficult to get the lawn right first time.

Turf can be expensive, lawn seed is cheaper of course, and at the moment with the wet warm weather it will germinate very quickly. It is more work, but if you can keep off it, in a month you'll have the beginnings of a new lawn. As dove say's if you get it right in the first place it's a great way to go.
