Yesterday I was cursing the rain, but this morning it was nice to go out and it was all damp, and I thought, great, no mucking about with the hose today. I can get on with the important jobs instead
I have to admit I do what Jim Macd does, I plant as soon as I think the plant will manage outside in a bed, I don't keep potting on - unless I've run out of room! I find that plants grow better in flower beds than in pots and need less maintenance.
But then in Dordogne if you go out for a day in summer everything in small pots is completely dried up when you get home. Which is why I've given up doing hanging baskets.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Well that's one thing we agree on......I'm also not doing hanging baskets, apart from a Fuschia (because I bought the wrong variety and it's a hanging one!) and my strawberry and tomato baskets. My reason isn't because of watering though but because I have no imagination to make them look pretty!
I'm totally confused regarding the perennials and just think I will do half and half, call it an experiment

Then please would you let us know what happens? Even if it's next year!
Yes I will Lizzie, I might start an 'experiment' thread
