Weed ID

Since the downpour yesterday quite a few weeds have shot up in the veg patch, including a few I haven't seen before but that look familiar.

On the pick below is a carrot seedling, does anyone know what the 'weed' to the left and the right of it is?  It looks familiar so I just wondered if it could be useful somewhere else in the garden?  There are other seedlings the same.

Please ignore the rest of the weeds, they will be coming out tomorrow weather permitting image

A bit hard to tell, but they could be poppies,

  • They might be poppy seedlings.  Poppies have that pale almost silvery green colouring.

You're right Dove, they could be, I thought they looked familiar. There were loads of poppies on the veg patch when we moved in but haven't had any in the back garden for ages.

I think I might try and move a couple and see what happens, I'd be pleased if they were poppies.....just not on my veg patch image Thank you.

I don't know if they will like being moved but I'll give it a go, they can't stay there as the carrots need to grow image

Careful as it depends on which type of poppies you are talking about.  The small yellow and orange (Icelandic?) poppies are hugely invasive.  I lived with these for 18 years in my last garden and all I could do was 'control' them to the best of my ability.  If they are the lovely red ones, I think you'll be okay.  I'd pot up a couple then gather the seeds when they've flowered, that way you can 'coddle' the plants a bit in the beginning and then sow the seeds exactly where you want them later in the year.
