Does anyone know what this is? I moved in a few months ago and it was just a big stump so must of been big at some point, was wondering whether to let it grow or not?
thanks for the quick responses everyone! Just had a look at some pics and i think i'll let it grow a bit, looks like it would be good for a bit of autumn colour
Mature Staghorn Sumach certainly can look lovely, even in its autumn/ winter mode - & the birds benefit from the seedheads too! BUT - it can become a nuiscance/ thug pseudo-tree and send up myriad suckers up to 1-2 metres away from the parent!
Marc22 it is a lovely tree, but it does sucker a lot we removed ours after two years as it went mad. I do think it's very close to your fence, it is more of bush shaped tree not an upright.
I think there was a reason why previous owners cut it down and I would honestly think twice about keeping it. Maybe have peek over the fence and see if neighbour has suckers growing in their garden.

Looks like Sumach to me.
Oh KEF you beat me to it.....I thought I might get my first one right
We used to have one in the garden when I was little and I loved it, so pretty for a tree
