I saw an European bee the other day. Now when I say this thing WAS the size of a golf ball I am NOT exaggerating! I landed in my back garden. Luckily I took a picture of it before it flew away. Here's the pic.

You do well with your palm trees Gnomey!!  Almost looks like another country.  That euro-bee does look very like a wasp doesn't it.  No wonder Nigel Farage is trying to get us out of Europe if that's what they have to offer....!

That's fantastic news Bee, well done on obviously making their new home appealing image

I must admit, I've seen a lot of bees already which is brilliant, we do need them for our food chain and hopefully they will be doing a good job of pollinating all my fruit and veg image When they are full I'll send them over to you image

Well, I didn't do anything to be honest.  I'm not sure how appealing a house full of dead bodies would be to us humans, but apparently, a deserted hive is the kind of place a swarm makes a bee-line for, because it smells so good!  I don't have another hive yet OL, but one day, I could consider putting out a swarm catcher hive given that it can obviously be done.

OL, I think the pollen and nectar they have supped on does indeed flavour the honey, so the raspberry flower will have some input, but unless you have a raspberry farm (what a thing of joy that would be!!)  the flavour will be too mixed with all the other stuff.  Up there in that Scotland they do a thing or two with raspberries and honey I believe.  Nut, I can't take credit for the hive design - my cousin's boyfriend brought the stencils and paint etc. and it is his trademark.  But they are rather beautiful, and I was very sad when the little hive died off.  For reference, he and I name our hive queens after the important and powerful ladies in history - so my surviving hive is Boudicca, and this one that has just been populated is Ze Tian - you will have to google her!!  Unless you did PhD in Chinese history.
