Copper for deterring slugs

Is there anything special about copper tape for deterring slugs, or will copper pipe or stripped copper wire do the same job/

This is what I've used to protect my hostas:-

I did some research when I was planning the bed and the actual copper rings in the bed seemed to be the best option in my opinion.  The hostas were planted last Saturday so I'll let everyone know how I get on in due course.

I have been using strips of copper cut from an old water tank and bent round into a circle. So far it seems to have worked. I was told to make sure that the plant did not bridge the copper ring and that the slugs could not crawl underneath.

Many thanks to you all for your comments, it's strange that some have success with copper and others don't

  • i used sticky copper tape stuck to the top of a cut off plastic water bottle to surround my lily shoots.

doesnt appear to have worked, slug trails and some severe damage to some shoots.
