magnolia tree

Hi was wondering if any one can help me  I have a magnolia tree about 12 years old  and it has got a scale like fungas growing round its trunk and branches never had this before and I dont know  what it is would any one be able to help me  the scales are black with a white edge to them a bit like a very small mushroom

    Sounds like one of the scale insects, oyster scale perhaps. They need to be removed with a brush and a soap based insecticide. The white is wax and it needs to be dissolved before the insecticide can get at the insect proper.

    thank you i will try that .could you suggest a good insecticid
