Bell Peppers

Hi.

For the first time I am growing bell peppers from seed, when should I repot them for the first time? They are in a propogator at the moment and are quite tall now with one set of leaves.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Are they true leaves or still the cotyledons? Either way, if they're developing some height you can transplant them into 3" pots now. Give them as much light and warmth as you can. Same as you would with tomato seedlings.

And re plant them deeper into the new pots as they will root from the stem if it is buried. Up to the seed leaves is fine

the leaves they have a the still the very first ones no others have grown as yet. so does this mean i should leave them for a bit longer?

Okay, they're still the cotyledons, the baby leaves. They're what nourish the seedling till the real leaves arrive. How tall are they exactly? And what colour are the stems? Proper green or very pale green?

If they are still in the propagator, they need to be removed asap.  Only keep seeds in one of those until they germinate, after that an indoor windowsill is a good place for them until the night temperature in your greenhouse (or outdoors) doesn't drop below 15C.  Leaving seedlings in propagators leads them to quickly become weak and leggy, which is what sounds like has happened to these.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

That's what I was thinking, Bob.

They can go outside into the sun during the day if temps are into the teens.

think my peppers are ok but my tomatoes look a bit spindly and wondered if they needed taking out.

the stems are still a nice green not pale. tried to upload a photo but wouldnt let me. on one of them a small set of second leaves have started to grow.the peppers still look nice and healthy at the moment as do the chillis.

Spindly (or leggy) means they're looking for light. Light is the priority now. Where do they live at the moment? Inside?

they are inside as of today but before they have been in the greenhouse outside.  Have a feeling they might be a bit cold or scorched as they stems are quite strong.

They're not going to get enough light inside. If they're an inch and a half or more tall, get them out of the propagator and into pots no bigger than 3". They need to get some roots developing which won't happen in the propagator.

Put them into the greenhouse which, hopefully, will give them sunlight and warmth. If the overnight temps in the greenhouse get below about 12C, bring them inside overnight. Put them out again next day.
