Creating lawn on hard ground.

I have acquired a small area of hard standing at the side of our home which we are making into garden space and would like to create a small grassed area. The ground is currently a mix of concrete, rubble etc. and I wonder how deep the soil should be for turf or seed to take?

About the depth of a large brick in my experience. If you think about how thick a chunk of turf is, you will realise that grass roots don't need to go down too far. Just consider drainage though, because the ground can't get too soggy, and feeding regularly, because eventually the grass will exhaust the nutrients in such a small depth of soil, so a feed every now and again will be necessary. But as a growing medium you don't need soil to be too deep. Also, in such a shallow bit of soil, you may have to water more often, so consider water retaining too - some compost in the soil for instance.
