June Berry at an end

What's happened to my June Berry (Saskatoon)? Planted it last summer and it seemed to take OK, dropped leaves and this year new buds appeared - but never opened. It was protected with a plastic sleeve against rabbits. I decided to move it, but when I dug it up, everything below about an inch under the ground had been eaten away, leaving a rounded hard stem. I asked the sellers and they suggested grubs in the ground, but I cannot see anything. Any ideas, people? And will it happen again.

checked a book i have and it says possible woodlouse damage
Thanks, I think it must be something like that. Have never had this happen before, and other trees in the same row seem untouched. Oh well!
Woodlice only eat decaying matter - they don't have strong mouthparts - they couldn't eat roots away to a stump - they'd only hoover up other critters' leavings.
