shrub/tree reshaping

my ceanothus, got a branch removed last year that looked like it was doing nothing, only to find it left a big gap at the frontl last year, this year it looks better but still now has two either side of the new growth, i need to reduce the size width ways as shrubs under it are now growing sideways, need advice on this as i dont want to ruin it or kill as i enjoy sitting under it after all the work i have done in getting all the lower branches off over the years.
