Growing tomatoes in pots
in Fruit & veg
Hello
I've been given four lovely tomato plants - I've never really grown them before (when I did I managed to kill them off!)
They are four different varieties - a normal tomato, a yellow, a plum and a cherry tomato. I'm going to put them into pots - I have 4 x 30cm pots which I can use.
I assume I need to prop them up with canes - does just a single one suffice?
Thanks! Lou

Basically yes laarobbins. Loosely tie the stems to the stake as they grow and unless they are of the tumbling variety(the cherry) then pinch out the side shoots as they grow. I presume you will be growing them outside so when they get to about 4-5 ft pinch out the growing tip to encourage more fruit.
I normally put three canes in and wind string around it to make an obelisk type support but a single one is fine if you like. Good luck.
And here's a picture of how I do it. Hope it's helpful.
Great - thanks guys! All very helpful advice. I think I will go with the three cane method! And I've bought some Tomorite so hopefully they will do better this year!

Hi, LaarR, (Lou): May I echo DaisyHC's methodology - note that a big saucer is used under each 12" pot to retain extra moisture from your (evening) watering. If growning outdoors, beware the whole fabrication toppling over in windy conditions. I position my single potted OD toms against a fence/ wall where a couple of eye bolts at either end of the run can have strong cords or wires strung between - and two of each trio of canes secured with wire before the toms grow up too high! Happy growing (& good eating!)!!
