Stipa Gigantia?

dannysondannyson Posts: 60

I made the mistake of cutting down the foliage on my few month old stupa when it turned brown during the winter.  Now its not doing anything.... no new growth which is a bit odd I figure?

If it turned brown in the winter it died. There are always a few brown leaves every year but it's evergreen.

Hmmm - thanks for those responses .... I'm no expert - obviously -  but I figure most grasses have to get used to being 'chopped' down by animals/weather and the like - so I'm thinking maybe the wet winter weather may have had something to do with it ... I am in Cornwall after all...and they are in pots!  One pot has shoved up a stem of around 2" - I'm reluctant to 'fiddle' with it and try and repot it as it could be the end of my little grass shoot of recovery as it were... but if ~I don't it could just die back.....?

I also have a Stipia in Cornwall! I always comb the dead foliage out but never cut down.  The stalks with the seedheads on have shot up in the last week or so.

In the first year I had problems with the stalks being broken off by the wind but over the last couple of years it seems to have got more robust.  Neighbourhood cats like to use the mound at the base as a sun lounger as its protected by a low front wall.

Thanks Verdun - Will keep that in mind.  Mine is protected by being planted in the corner of a front garden plot protected on two sides by a wall approx 1m high.  The two walls protect it from the direction of the sea wind.  Its surrounded by japanese anenomes, a lovely hebe and a euphorbia
