My onions are turning over at the top already why is this could it be lack of water?

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I have tried watering onions,have been told by other allotmenteers that I may have planted them when the soil was to wet after all the rain in the spring!
