I think LoganB put membrane or something at the back. I think I'd use marine ply to make it more substantial if you wanted it long term. Heavy plastic would probably do the job reasonably well too. I htink she may have gone into the construction on her original thread. Perhaps she'll take a look later
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Thanks fairy, LH did say something about a membrane or something on the back, but wondered how you would get 'pockets' to plant anything in.....or am I being thick and missing something
Hi! It's backed with landscape fabric fabric, bottom back and sides, then filled with compost. I had to keep it flat for planting, and for a few weeks after, but then the roots held it all together when lifted! It weighs a tonne tho... No moving it now! The pockets are just the spaces between the slats of the pallet. There was no modification other than a few bits of wood nailed onto the back for support.

Nice display of vertical gardening. What did you use behind the pallet to contain the strawbs?
Bumping up for Sweet Pea

You could do something similar for herbs and maybe salad crops if space was limited.
I once saw an old bookcase being used for a similar project. Must have been a timber one which was painted or stained to use outside.
