Definitely not too dry this year, we have had plenty of the wet stuff. It was quite mild earlier in the year and then turned cold after the flowers had finished. So i think the cold is looking like most likely culprit.
We are having the same problem with blackcurrants and gooseberries--dropping off before fully ripe or turning mushy and blotchy and then falling off. Shouldn't be too dry as they have been very well manured and mulched through the winter/spring so the ground is still quite moist. Possibly cold spells at night could be the answer.
This just happened to mine too, black currants not my gooseberries. The gooseberries just started flowering though so they are probably ok. We've not had a frost, but we have had really hot weather very early then back to cold for a few. It's such a bummer it was looking like I would have my first really good crop this year????.

Sound like cold nights could be the answer, not had frost but some nights had been quite chilly. Thanks for all advice.
