How to improve drainage

I have some marjoram that I want to plant out. However, having done a little internet browsing, I'm a bit confused. It needs well draining soil (it will be in a pot) and I was going to add a bit of either sand or grit. I brought several little bags from a local shop.  Is adding this a good idea, and if so do I mix it in or add it first?

    Hi Denno image

I'd use an unglazed terracotta pot (old fashioned flower pot type) with a bit of broken pot over the hole in the bottom - then I'd mix 2 parts of John Innes No 3 loam-based compost with one part of horticultural grit.

That should keep your marjoram happy.

I would use grit - sand can hold a lot of water and is actually quite poor at draining.
