What is this?

image

Can anybody tell me what this is?  It is sort of tree peony in stature, but has much fleshier leaves and they are sort of hairy, very slightly.  The stems are just woody sticks in the winter, but the new growth is hairy too.  It hasnt flowered this year, yet.  Inherited with new garden (along with ground elder, nuf said!)  Nookerboots

Not at all sure, but could it be one of the species Hydrangeas?

Have you looked at Hydrangea villosa Nookaboots? It's nothing like the bushes you see outside seaside boarding houses.
