Jerusalem artichokes

I planted 20 of them last year in a sectioned off area of my plot as, I know they spread like wild fire.

No sooner than the shoots appear something is eating them!.

I protect them with plastic buckets with the bottoms cut off but something is still getting in there.

Any help appreciated

Love them but daren't introduce them to my small veg area. Agree with Welshonion as to culprits.

Surround the area with sharp sand - that'll help keep them off until the artichokes have got going.
