Syinga - not in leaf let alone flower!

Hi there

i have a 4 year old lilac which had leaves and two flowers last year. It's about five feet tall. However this year although there are leaf buds, no leaves have spouted. Ive broken a couple of buds up and they're green inside. Also snapped off a twig and that too has sap and is green under the bark.

Ive put down mulch, fed it with chicken pellets and watered it, but still no sprouting leaves! Do they rest? Or should I remove it?

Any ideas welcome!

Umph! I fear it too but was hoping for an answer that would wake it from dormancy! I hate taking out a plant that can still bleed.image

ah that's sad kitty, i have severe lilac envy as don't have one...yet! i may be pushing it fit one in but fit one in i will! philippa's idea is great, take as many cuttings as you have pots for, who knows, fingers crossed for you

Good idea about taking cuttings I will do that before I chop it down. Here's hoping it might reshoot from the base too. Both great ideas so thanks. I might do it after the weekend as I was hoping the hot weather might wake it! Can you tell I really want it to grow, I'm in denial!image

Mine died as well this year.  It got buds as if it was fine then died.  I don't know if it was unhappy with the wet winter/clay soil combo it got this year.

I sadly lost two lilacs that were growing in my churchyard but overhanging the vicarage fence into my back garden. My wife loved the smell of them and was upset when I told her that the winter wet and wind had taken its toll. Sorry to hear that yours has died. I'm sure it wasn't down to anything you did or didn't do - just a bad winter for lilacs.

Buddlejas didn't like this winter either.  Had 3 small ones die.  Luckily they had self seeded from my Mum's garden so were free!
