Making a bird feeder

Hi all,
I'm putting up a simple shelf in the garden for putting loose birdseed on. I've got some rough sawn timber and want to stain it to preserve it and make it look right.
Does anyone know if it is it safe for the birds if I put the seed on stained wood?
Thanks, Andi.

No I wouldn't. Treated wood contains many chemicals some of which are harmful to birds.
Thanks, I thought this may be the case, but it's always good to get feedback.
Useful guidance here, including wood preservatives that are ok
