Pruning large box shrubs

Box should be pruned in spring and mid-summer, if that's any help - I'm having to guess what your question was!

    And what about quite small bo - I have plants about 12" high, 3 yrs old - not pruned them thus far, but they are beginning to look pretty straggly this year, and have put on quite a lot of growth quite recently

    Same applies to them, shape them as you need to.

    Now till end June is the optimal time to prune any buxux/box. You can see the new growth easily as it is a paler green so you avoid cutting the old wood.
