Rose walk Hell
Afternoon fellows
I'm looking for a bit of advice on the maintenance of a Rose walk, it has yew hedges down each side that love to home bind weed and beds that no matter how much I weed its seems to be a constant threat. I was wondering if perhaps the methods I have been advised to do, are not perhaps correct.
Currently each year ( I've been here for just over 2) I pull out all the old weed mesh/mats and re-cover with bark chippings/mulch then leading up to summer I seem to spend countless hours down there pulling out the bind weeds, sticky weed and anything else that has chosen to spawn.
What I'm wondering is would I get better results by simply removing the matting and being able to dig it all through and mulch with horse manure?
or perhaps someone has an even better method?
thanks for taking time to read this essay.
Kindest regards

I think at the end of the day it comes to persistent hand weeding until till you get rid of roots or suckers , by keeping up with weeding you lessen its chance of reproducing and making sure you do not let any seed heads linger. Gardening is about the up keep and weeding which you ll always have to do, even with the use of chemicals which are a short term solution any way.
I'd spray the bindweed with glysophate as they appear. It does take a while to get on top of it, but eventually you will kill the roots right down. The alternative is to dig up the yew hedge as that's where the bindweed roots are hiding. Even with a weed suppressing mating bindweed finds a way through, but it would keep the other perennial weeds in check and lay bark on top of the matting.
