Another post advised that they should be planted in pots, allowed to establish then plant out.

i took that advise and it worked, plenty of flowers this year

I potted up some bare root ones a few weeks ago, and was going to put them under a tall hedge on the drive, it is very shady under the hedge especially as the leaves are all out now. Will it be too shady under the hedge?

They like a shady area, its where they grow naturally. Perhaps they're new plants so not that established roots wise, or maybe they're too crammed together and need digging up to space out. I did this with mine early in the spring and it did stop them flowering a bit this year but they grow quickly and I'm expecting better results next year

Perhaps it was all the rain? Made lots of root growth but stopped the energy going into making flowers
