chilli re-potting

Hostafan1Hostafan1 Posts: 34,887

I bought a chilli plant from Waitrose a few weeks ago. It's doing well, flowering  profusely although most fall off. It's set some new fruit. I know we have a Chilli expert out there somewhere but can't remember who. I would love to have it outside, ( during the day at this time of year) but it's so top heavy I can't. I've also read they should be left to wilt before re-watering. The poor thing will blow away. It's in a small pot, maybe 4" and I think it needs some bottom weight so I thought  a clay pot, but need advice on compost.

I just use multipurpose and john innes mixed, if you're putting it outside maybe add some grit too.

It's Stacey who is our expert Hostafan, however she hasn't been on much and I know she is going on hols as she said the other day.  I did bump up the Chilli thread last night, there may be some info on there.  I will bump up again for you.  I have just used general MPC for mine and will be planting them outside in stone pots when I get round to repotting them image

thanks for the help . I'll try MP with added grit for weight as much as anything else.

Hi. A 4" pot seems very small.  My chilli plants are  6"  tall and I will re-pot them on Wednesday.  Mine are Hot Patio Sizzle variety which don't grow tall but if you have jalapeno they grow taller and will need staked.  They will go into pots about 8" or 9".  I always put my Patio Sizzle outside from end May, but I found the jalapeno I  had last year didn't do very well outside so I think they need a greenhouse or really bright windowsill.

I have heard that allowing them to wilt will make the chillis hotter.   Good luck with your plant.  Mags

Thanks Mags. I've never grown them before, but when it's dry, it's prone to falling over, hence the re-pot.

Mine are in the greenhouse, full sun in 25cm pots.

They will stay in these pots all Summer now as they are sufficient for holding enough moisture.

flippin' 'eck Matt. Maybe I should be thinking of a bigger pot altogether??

Have you grown them like this before?

Mattbeer's pots are the size I will use when I pot mine on, probably this weekend.  If the pot isn't big enough the chilli plants won't grow properly.   Mags
