Hydrangea

in Talkback

Are hydrangeas awkward plants? I bought this one yesterday at a plant sale and don't know whether to keep it in the pot or plant it out. My husband thinks they won't grow around here as he hasn't noticed any around the area.

Hydrangeas are easy to grow lulu, they flower on wood produced the previous year, and the colour is determined by the ph of the soil. They like moist but well drained conditions and will do well in full sun or semi shaded positions. The one you have looks very healthy and should do well where it is.
Plant it out, they grow away anywhere, i have some beautiful ones in complete shade, others in full sun, very easy plant.
Unless of course you live in an area where there are hard late frosts. In which case, while the plant lives, it never flowers as the new growth is killed by the frost. We have a few still around the garden and they have rarely flowered for us, as we get incredibly cold east winds which burn off the new stems almost every year. Even though they are planted in the most sheltered spot we have.
Give it a whirl though.
Lulu, just another point, when it flowers if its blue and you want to repot or pot into garden then you need to make sure it has acid soil (lots of Aluminium in the soil ) 5.5 to 5 PH , Mauve colour is acid to neutral soil, Alkaline for pink flowers and to enhance the pink just give a little limestone or chalk, if your garden soil is not acid then it will turn pinkish, and if you can ,only use rainwater.
Thanks all !
Just said hydrangea pink on the label
You might take a look at other kinds of hydrangea, I recently got vanilla fraise and love 'lime lights' too.
And i forgot White /Greenish stays that colour nothing will change it, and cuttings are just so easy and for FREE
