Mystery plant

  • Don't think I went for any Japanese salads - as far as I recall!  Now I understand what you mean, Nutcutlet, about the horseradish - I don't actually eat either radishes or horseradish sauce, that's why if it is horseradish it wasn't on my radar...  Maybe I'd better wait and see if it flowers?  Or is there some test I can do on a bit of the root (although I won't recognise the flavour)?  I WOULD feed some to my friend who eats anything, but I don't want to poison her!

The roots would have heat, so much heat that you wouldn't notice the flavour.

But Dove doesn't think it is horseradish.

If you look at the bottom right hand corner of the photo there's what looks like a Red-veined Sorrel - often included  in packs of mixed salad leaves - did you sow a pack of them?  If so your bigger plant could well be from that and as I said, now in it's second year it will be much bigger and more robust.

  • Hi Dove,

No, I bought and planted the sorrel, GKH and parsley that you can see each from separate plants.  It's entirely possible that in my enthusiasm at the time, I bought another sorrel (though unhelpfully, I didn't write anything down about a second one).  Maybe the plant I bought from our local Country Market just disappeared and I'm barking up the wrong 'tree'!?  In which case I am tempted to taste a bit.

That's it - Common sorrel -  rumex acetosa

If you taste a bit it'll be slightly lemony.

That's a substantial plant you have there image

  • It is a big and healthy plant, to be sure!  Encouraged, I shall go down to the allotment in a few mins, check it out with the pic and if it looks the same I shall taste a bit.  Thank you all very much for your kind help.
